Vanessa Madrigal-Lauchland earned her PhD in US History from the University of California in Davis, with a Designated Emphasis in African American Studies. Dr. Madrigal-Lauchland’s dissertation, The Eugenic Barrio: Housing, Policing, and Education in Stockton, CA, 1900-1958, explores the shift from the pathologization to the criminalization of Black and Mexican bodies and urban space. Her current research focuses on Black-Chicano resistance and solidarity in education in the late 1960s, in Stockton, California. This research brought her to work closely with community members, educators, and activists to innovate curricular models that support student success. Dr. Madrigal-Lauchland holds a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, and teaches in the Chicana/o/x Studies Department at UC Davis, where she supports first-gen scholars like herself to navigate the academy and engage in community-sustaining research that they bring back to empower the communities from which they come.
